Manama: Thailand's Department of Disease Control (DDC) has confirmed 40 cases of monkeypox (mpox) across the country so far in 2025, as efforts continue to contain the outbreak.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the DDC said that the number of cases this year is significantly lower than the 176 recorded in 2024 and 676 in 2023. Thirteen deaths linked to the disease have been reported to date.
Authorities urged high risk groups to adhere to preventive guidelines and said international arrivals are being monitored to prevent the introduction of more severe strains.
The department noted that the current strain circulating in Thailand is mild, but the virus, which is part of the smallpox family and spreads easily, remains a public health concern.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) declared in August last year that monkeypox continues to be a global health emergency and extended its standing recommendations for another year.
