Ankara: Italy's Giulio Pellizzari clinched victory in stage 17 of the Vuelta a Espana, with Britain's Tom Pidcock taking second place. Pellizzari, a 21-year-old cyclist, made a decisive move 3.5 kilometers from the finish on the Alto de El Morredero, a challenging summit, to secure his win. Pidcock followed closely, finishing ahead of a group of general classification favorites, with Pellizzari's Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe team-mate Jai Hindley completing the podium in third place.
According to BBC, before Wednesday's stage, riders had agreed to neutralize the event in case of disruptions, a precautionary measure that has become common in the Grand Tour this year due to protests. Vuelta organizers later announced that Thursday's individual time trial in Valladolid would be shortened from 27.2 kilometers to 12.2 kilometers to ensure "greater protection" for the participants.
Pascal Chanteur, vice-president of the riders' union, mentioned in an interview with Reuters that if safety concerns persist, riders might consider withdrawing from the race. "The riders voted by a majority to stop in case of a new problem. They will then decide whether to continue or to end the event," Chanteur stated. Meanwhile, Jack Haig of Bahrain Victorious expressed concerns about the situation, noting that they are caught in a predicament that does not directly involve them.
The race is scheduled to conclude in Madrid on Sunday, with Jonas Vingegaard currently leading the general classification after stage 17. The uncertainty surrounding the event continues as organizers and participants prioritize safety amid ongoing challenges.
