NIHR Council Condemns Iranian Attacks on Bahrain in Extraordinary Session


Manama: The Council of Commissioners of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), led by Chairperson Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, convened an extraordinary meeting to discuss the human rights and humanitarian consequences of recent Iranian attacks on Bahrain. The session concentrated on the institution’s responsibility to safeguard and enhance human rights within the nation.



According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting addressed the latest developments and significant breaches of fundamental rights due to the attacks, including threats to civilian lives and damage to essential infrastructure. These actions were identified as violations of international human rights and humanitarian law, especially concerning the prohibition against deliberate or indiscriminate attacks on civilians and civilian property.



The commissioners condemned the attacks, stressing that they constitute serious violations of international law and the United Nations Charter, infringing upon fundamental rights such as life, security, and physical integrity. The board also commended the swift and effective response of Bahraini authorities, which involved preventive measures and rapid interventions to safeguard citizens and residents, demonstrating institutional readiness and a dedication to maintaining human dignity.



Al Derazi emphasized the steps taken by the institution since the onset of the attacks, including professional monitoring and documentation of violations, collecting pertinent evidence, and maintaining ongoing coordination with authorities to ensure prompt support and protection for those affected.



The board reviewed proposals from its members regarding the institution’s role during this period and approved the establishment of a dedicated subcommittee to document the Iranian aggression and its impact on human rights in Bahrain.



The meeting concluded with a reaffirmation of the institution’s commitment to fulfilling its national role with independence and professionalism, closely monitoring developments, and taking all necessary actions within its mandate to bolster human rights protection and uphold human dignity.
