National Institution for Human Rights Chairman Highlights King’s Remarks on Security and Human Rights

Manama: Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), emphasized that the recent remarks by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to the media highlight a critical principle within the human rights framework: the interdependence between safeguarding national security and protecting human rights. He pointed out that security and stability form the essential foundation within which rights and public freedoms are exercised.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Derazi condemned Iranian attacks targeting the Kingdom of Bahrain, labeling them as clear violations of international law. These actions, he noted, directly undermine fundamental rights, particularly the right to security and safety. He stressed that measures undertaken by the state to safeguard its security and stability are both a legal obligation and a sovereign duty.

Al Derazi further remarked that His Majesty’s emphasis on accountability for those proven to be involved in acts undermining national security or violating the duty of loyalty to the nation aligns with the state’s right to protect its integrity. This protection is crucial to maintaining social stability, within the framework of the rule of law and established legal procedures.

He underscored that achieving a balance between the requirements of national security and respect for human rights remains a cornerstone of building a state of law and institutions. He emphasized that protecting the nation is inseparable from safeguarding human dignity, and both elements reinforce each other.

Al Derazi noted that His Majesty’s remarks reinforce the concept of national responsibility, rooted in respect for the law and the rejection of anything that undermines social unity or exposes the Kingdom’s security and stability to risk.

He concluded by affirming that the National Institution for Human Rights will continue its oversight role in addressing such matters. This role is vital in strengthening the principles of justice, reinforcing confidence in the rule of law, and maintaining the balance between safeguarding national security and protecting rights and freedoms.
