Madagascar Enforces Night Curfew Amidst Protests Over Utility Outages

Manama: Authorities in Madagascar imposed a night curfew in the capital Antananarivo following violent protests over prolonged power and water outages. Police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse demonstrators.

According to Bahrain News Agency, protesters blocked roads with burning tyres and rocks, and there were reports of looting at shops and banks, as well as arson at new cable car stations. The homes of three politicians close to President Andry Rajoelina were also attacked during the unrest.

Police chief Angelo Ravelonarivo announced that the curfew would run from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. starting Thursday and would remain in effect until calm is restored.
