Health Undersecretary Participates in UN High-Level Meeting on Noncommunicable Diseases

New york: Dr. Lulwa Rashid Shuwaiter, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health, participated in The UN High-Level Meeting on the Prevention of Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health (NCDs), held in New York. The meeting was centered around the theme 'Equity and integration: transforming lives and livelihoods through leadership and action on noncommunicable diseases and the promotion of mental health and well-being.'

According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting saw participation from member states, civil society, and private sector representatives, focusing on strengthening global action to tackle rising health challenges. Dr. Shuwaiter, in her address, emphasized that health remains a national priority and a cornerstone of Bahrain's sustainable development agenda. She underscored the Kingdom's alignment with UN and WHO recommendations, showcasing its commitment to international collaboration in addressing shared health concerns.

Dr. Shuwaiter elaborated on Bahrain's achievements over the past decade, highlighting the establishment of a national taskforce to combat chronic diseases, regular health surveys, a national cancer registry, and early detection programs. She also mentioned initiatives aimed at curbing obesity, regulating food marketing, and imposing taxes on sugary drinks and tobacco. Additionally, the launch of a national nutritional guide was noted.

The integration of NCD and mental health services within Bahrain's primary healthcare system was also highlighted by Dr. Shuwaiter. She outlined the progress under the National Mental Health Plan, which includes expanding psychological support services, building specialized facilities, training health professionals, and introducing remote care.

Dr. Shuwaiter concluded her remarks by calling for stronger global solidarity to advance health equity and sustainable healthcare systems, reaffirming Bahrain's determination to continue collaborating with international partners to ensure a healthier future for all.
