Taiwan Flood Death Toll Rises to 15, Search for Missing Ongoing

Taipei: Taiwanese authorities said on Friday that the death toll from the collapse of a barrier lake in Hualien County has risen to 15, after the body of a missing woman was found in Guangfu Township, one of the worst hit areas.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the lake had formed after a typhoon in July, but heavy rains from Typhoon Ragasa on Tuesday caused its banks to collapse, releasing about 15.4 million tonnes of water and mud into nearby areas.

Authorities said the lake's volume has fallen to 7.7 percent of its original capacity. Emergency teams are continuing rescue efforts, with 69 people injured and seven still missing. Some areas were submerged up to a full residential floor, and drones will be deployed for monitoring once weather improves.
