GCC Secretary General Applauds UNHRC’s Resolution on Iranian Military Aggression

Geneva: Jasem Mohamed Albudaiwi, Secretary General of the Gulf Cooperation Council, welcomed the unanimous adoption by the United Nations Human Rights Council of the draft resolution titled “Effects of the Recent Military Aggression Launched by Iran”.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the resolution was submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain on behalf of the GCC states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, and it received exceptional and broad support from more than 100 countries across various regional groups.

Albudaiwi stated that the adoption of this resolution during the urgent debate, held as part of the 61st Session of the Human Rights Council, reflects the international community’s categorical rejection of the blatant Iranian attacks on the territories of member states not involved in any conflict. He added that it also reflects condemnation of the grave impacts of this aggression under international human rights law and on international peace and security.

The GCC Secretary General commended the content of the adopted resolution, particularly its clear condemnation and strong denunciation of the unjustified and deliberate attacks launched by the Islamic Republic of Iran against civilians and critical civilian infrastructure. He noted that these attacks have resulted in civilian casualties and extensive damage within the GCC states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

He further highlighted their broader implications for regional and international stability, including maritime security, environmental protection, global trade routes, and sustainable development, as well as their significant impact on international peace and security. He also welcomed the resolution’s emphasis on the need for the Islamic Republic of Iran to adhere to its obligations regarding the protection of human rights and the principles of international law.

Albudaiwi explained that this includes respect for state sovereignty and territorial integrity, the protection of civilians, and the immediate cessation of its violations. He added that it also includes the obligation to provide compensation for damages resulting from these violations, as well as a call to engage in dialogue and adopt peaceful means for dispute resolution.

He affirmed that the broad support received by the resolution, adopted by consensus, clearly reflects wide international agreement. He stressed that attacks against states not party to any conflict cannot be justified under international law under any pretext and lack any legal or factual basis. The GCC Secretary General noted that the resolution calls on Iran to comply with its obligations under international human rights law and the principles set out in the United Nations Charter.

He stated that this necessitates close international follow-up to ensure accountability and to ensure the cessation and non-recurrence of such violations. He reaffirmed the GCC states’ continued steadfast approach based on a commitment to human rights, respect for international law, and the preservation of regional and international stability.

He highlighted the promotion of dialogue and the peaceful settlement of disputes. He also welcomed the continued engagement of the international community in addressing the human rights impacts of these violations in line with the outcomes of the adopted resolution and supported all efforts aimed at peace, security, stability, and sustainable development in the region.

Albudaiwi also commended the significant and valuable efforts exerted by the Gulf group, chaired by the Kingdom of Bahrain, and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Geneva. He noted that these efforts led to the convening of this emergency session of the Human Rights Council and helped mobilize international support for the adoption of this historic resolution, which received broad international consensus.
