Manama: The Bahrain Standards and Metrology Directorate (BSMD) within the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism is joining the international community in celebrating World Standards Day, observed annually on 14 October. The occasion highlights the vital role of standards in advancing quality, safety, and sustainability worldwide.
According to Bahrain News Agency, this year's theme, "Shared Vision for a Better World," reflects the importance of global cooperation in developing standards that drive innovation, protect consumers, and facilitate international trade, in line with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals. Shaikh Hamad bin Salman Al Khalifa, Assistant Undersecretary for Domestic and Foreign Trade at the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, stated that standardisation is a cornerstone of sustainable development. He noted that high-quality standards strengthen confidence between producers and consumers, enhance the competitiveness of national products, and contribute positively to Bahrain's economic growth.
He added that World Standards Day provides an opportunity to renew efforts to strengthen collaboration among national and international standardisation bodies, ensuring that standards evolve in harmony with global benchmarks while supporting innovation and environmental responsibility across sectors.
Shaikh Hamad emphasised that partnership lies at the heart of the National Standards Body's approach. Through close coordination with government entities and the private sector, Bahrain has worked to align its national regulations with international best practices and to develop standards that reflect national priorities. The Kingdom also plays an active role within the Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO), which promotes technical integration among GCC countries and the development of unified Gulf standards to support the regional market.
He added that Bahrain's participation in the technical committees of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) reinforces the alignment of its national standards with global frameworks, further strengthening the Kingdom's international presence in this field.
Shaikh Hamad concluded by reaffirming the National Standards Body's commitment to advancing cooperation with local and global partners in support of Bahrain's Economic Vision 2030, and to positioning the Kingdom as an active contributor to global efforts in standardisation and sustainable development.
