Manama: The Ministry of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, in collaboration with the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, the Public Prosecution, and the Ministry of Interior, has announced the integration of video conferencing technology in criminal courts. This strategic move includes the approval of designated court facilities for the attendance of defendants, which will operate under the Ministry's oversight.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Shaikh Khalid bin Ali Al Khalifa, Deputy President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary and President of the Court of Cassation; Dr. Ali bin Fadhl Al Buainain, Attorney General; and Nawaf bin Mohammed Al Maawda, Minister of Justice, Islamic Affairs and Endowments, conducted an inspection visit to one of the courtrooms at the Ministry. The purpose of the visit was to review the digital mechanism in place and ensure the integrity of all judicial procedures.
These designated facilities are recognized as a legal extension of the courtroom, with all legal protections for defendants being fully preserved. These include conducting public hearings, having a Public Prosecution representative present, and allowing defence counsel to attend either at these facilities or in the main courtroom at the Ministry.
The implementation of video conferencing in criminal courts is designed to streamline litigation procedures for inmates, minimize the need for their physical transfer to court premises, and ensure that all legal rights and guarantees are thoroughly maintained.
