Brussels: NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio highlighted commitment to NATO unity and objectives in remarks on the sidelines of the organisation's Foreign Minister meeting today.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Rutte expressed confidence in the transatlantic alliance despite recent tensions. He referred to the repeated assurances from the United States regarding their commitment to NATO and Article 5, the alliance's collective defence clause. Rutte noted a significant increase in European defence budgets, marking the largest surge since the Cold War, but acknowledged that further efforts are necessary.
Rubio echoed Rutte's sentiments, dismissing concerns about US disengagement from NATO. He confirmed that the United States remains actively involved in NATO and criticised media narratives suggesting otherwise. Rubio reiterated President Trump's support for the alliance, while emphasizing the need for NATO to enhance its capabilities. He stressed that strengthening NATO requires partners to develop more capabilities.
Both officials addressed the interconnected nature of global threats, mentioning challenges posed by countries such as Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran. Rutte highlighted the increasing connection between the Indo-Pacific and Euro-Atlantic regions. Rubio proposed a clear pathway for allies to increase defence spending to 5% of GDP, acknowledging the time needed to achieve this but stressing its necessity given current threats.
