Manama: RCSI Medical University of Bahrain has announced the publication of a commemorative book titled From Dublin to Dilmun, which documents the University's journey since its establishment in 2004.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the book is co-authored by Professor Sameer Otoom, President of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain, and Professor Joe McMenamin, Professor Emeritus of RCSI in Dublin and former Vice President for Academic Affairs and Head of the School of Medicine. It provides an in-depth narrative of the University's founding, mission, and ethos, highlighting the institution's transformation into a centre of excellence in medical education and its contribution to healthcare in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The publication pays tribute to all organisations and individuals who contributed to the University's establishment and growth.
The book traces the origins of RCSI's presence in the Kingdom of Bahrain to a collaboration dating back over fifty years. This longstanding partnership between Ireland and the United Kingdom in medical and nursing education was formalised in 1980, when the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and the Ministry of Health signed an agreement to support postgraduate training. This led to the creation of the Bahrain Family Medicine Programme and, in 1982, the establishment of the first RCSI Overseas Centre for Basic Surgical Training.
Building on this foundation, discussions between RCSI and the Government of the Kingdom of Bahrain led to the creation of a new medical university that would offer an Irish-international curriculum and confer both Irish and Bahraini medical degrees. This vision aligned with the Kingdom's commitment to building a knowledge-based economy. The initiative was formalised in October 2003 with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, paving the way for the establishment of RCSI Medical University of Bahrain in Busaiteen.
From Dublin to Dilmun explores major milestones in the university's development, including the implementation of a pioneering transnational education model, the expansion of clinical programmes, and the launch of additional academic offerings such as the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery and Postgraduate Studies and Research. It also reflects on the student journey, the evolving alumni network, and the various challenges and opportunities faced over the years.
The publication reflects the support of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the ongoing follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
RCSI Medical University of Bahrain expressed its appreciation to all stakeholders and partners whose steadfast support has been instrumental in the University's continued success and advancement.
