Qatar Energy and Samsung C and T Ink Deal for Dukhan Solar Power Plant Construction

Doha: Qatar Energy has signed an agreement with Samsung C and T's Engineering and Construction Group for the construction of a large-scale solar power plant in Dukhan, located about 80 kilometers west of Doha.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the Dukhan solar power plant is set to be among the largest globally, with a planned development in two phases that will reach a total electricity generation capacity of 2,000 megawatts by mid-2029. This project is expected to double Qatar's solar power production capacity, significantly contributing to the country's renewable energy objectives.

The agreement was formalized by the Qatari Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of Qatar Energy, Saad Sherida Al Kaabi, and President and CEO of Samsung C and T, Sechul Oh, during a ceremony at QatarEnergy's headquarters in Doha. The event was also attended by the President of Kahramaa, Abdulla bin Ali Al Theyab, as well as senior executives from both companies.

Minister Al Kaabi highlighted the environmental benefits, stating that upon completion, the Dukhan solar power plant, along with the Al Kharsaah, Mesaieed, and Ras Laffan solar power plants, will help reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 4.7 million tons annually. The solar facilities are expected to contribute up to 30% of Qatar's total peak electricity demand.

The first phase of the Dukhan solar power plant will commence by dispatching 1,000 MW of power to the KAHRAMAA grid towards the end of 2028. The plant will feature a solar tracker system and will enhance efficiency with the installation of inverters capable of operating in high-temperature environments.
