Manama: Dr Mohammed bin Mubarak bin Dainah, Oil and Environment Minister and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, opened a workshop on the outcomes of the Climate Resilience Project for Bahrain's Water Sector. The event marked a significant step in Bahrain's efforts to address climate change impacts on its water resources.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the project is supported by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and implemented in cooperation with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The workshop saw the attendance of Amna Hamad Al Rumaihi, Supreme Council for Environment Chief Executive Officer, alongside representatives from government entities, the private sector, academic institutions, and organisations focused on the water sector.
The Minister emphasized that the Climate Resilience Project for Bahrain's Water Sector is a leading national initiative aimed at providing an integrated scientific and technical foundation. This foundation supports planning and decision-making, strengthens water security, and improves the efficiency of water resource management, aligning with national priorities for sustainable development and climate change adaptation.
Dr. Bin Dainah highlighted that the workshop represents the culmination of the project's efforts to boost the resilience of Bahrain's water sector against climate change. It supports the implementation of the National Water Strategy 2021 - 2030 and promotes integrated water resources management principles. He also acknowledged the Water Resources Council's pivotal role in guiding the project, developing its outcomes, and ensuring alignment with national priorities.
The workshop reviewed the technical and strategic outcomes of the project, which include guidelines and technical designs for greywater reuse and rainwater harvesting, as well as water conservation practices for homes and farms. Additionally, findings from water audits in the industrial and agricultural sectors were discussed.
Advanced studies and models were also presented, including a hydrological groundwater model for sustainable groundwater management, a study on the impacts of climate change and sea-level rise on coastal areas, and a gender mainstreaming policy for the water sector.
The workshop provided a platform for participating entities, experts, and specialists to discuss the implementation of the project's outcomes and recommendations. This initiative supports national efforts towards sustainable water resource management in the Kingdom of Bahrain.
