Geneva: Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, Chairman of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), underscored the importance of the urgent session of the Human Rights Council held in Geneva, highlighting its role in addressing the human rights and humanitarian repercussions of the Iranian attacks and their impact on civilians and civilian infrastructure.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Derazi commended the role of the Kingdom of Bahrain, on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in calling for the urgent session in line with international law, reflecting commitment to protecting civilians, promoting regional peace and security, and addressing violations affecting state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He noted that the session and the adopted resolution included clear condemnation of the Iranian attacks targeting civilians and vital infrastructure, affirming that such acts constitute violations of international law, including international human rights law and international humanitarian law, particularly principles related to the protection of civilians and respect for state sovereignty.
Al Derazi emphasised the importance of accountability for these violations and ensuring redress for victims as key elements in achieving justice and reinforcing confidence in the international human rights system.
He affirmed that the NIHR continues to monitor developments through its specialised committees by assessing the humanitarian repercussions of the attacks, documenting damage affecting civilians and infrastructure, and coordinating with relevant authorities to review the level of assistance provided, in line with international standards.
