NIHR Board of Commissioners holds coordination meeting

The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR)’s Board of Commissioners, chaired by Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, held a coordination meeting on the prospective field visits to the reformation, rehabilitation and detention centres during Ashura commemoration 2022, to follow up on the freedom given to the inmates to practise their religious rituals easily and without any encroachment on the freedom and privacy of the other inmates from other religions and sects.

During the meeting, the Board of Commissioners adopted an integrated programme in preparation for the visits over a period of several days. It highlighted the importance of ensuring the continuation of all inmates’ practice of their religious rites, in line with international standards related to protecting the rights of inmates, including those related to practising religious rituals, with an emphasis on observing the regulations of the reformation and rehabilitation centers.

The Board of Commissioners affirmed that based on NIHR’s role and jurisdictions stipulated by the law of its establishment, and in a framework of transparency and clarity to work on the protection and consolidation of human rights, a special report will be issued on the field visits that members of the Board of Commissioners will undertake during the Ashura commemoration this year. The report will show the procedures and services carried out by the management of the centers with regard to the inmates’ practice of their religious rituals.
