Manama: Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, highlighted the significance of National Environment Day, observed annually on February 4, as a key occasion to underscore Bahrain's commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and raising public awareness about preserving natural resources for future generations. He noted that, under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, environmental protection and sustainability are national priorities, reflected in programs addressing climate change, resource conservation, and sustainable practices.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Mubarak emphasised the role of the Supreme Council for Environment, chaired by His Highness Shaikh Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, in advancing environmental initiatives, promoting recycling, reducing waste, and fostering community participation. He highlighted key initiatives including the Afforestation Plan, aiming to plant 3.6 million trees by 2035 to expand green spaces, enhance quality of life, and support Bahrain's carbon neutrality goal by 2060, noting that 2.4 million trees (67% of the target) were planted in 2025. He also mentioned the "Bahrain Mangrove" initiative, designed to raise awareness of mangroves' ecological role and increase their numbers fourfold by 2035.
The Minister stated that National Environment Day 2026, under the slogan "Restore It to Revive It", emphasises responsible environmental behaviour, recycling, and resource sustainability. He added that the ministry has distributed 300 household recycling centres across Bahrain, continues construction and agricultural waste recycling, and uses organic compost to support afforestation and agriculture projects, reinforcing environmental sustainability.
He concluded that the day provides a national platform to enhance environmental awareness, strengthen societal commitment to protecting the environment, and highlight ongoing government efforts to ensure a sustainable and safe environment for future generations.
