Manama: In line with the royal order of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa to preserve the historical and cultural identity of the Kingdom's cities and buildings, and following the directives of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, to launch the Muharraq City Development Plan, Wael bin Nasser Al Mubarak, Minister of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture, affirmed the ministry's commitment to preserving the city's heritage and urban character while providing modern services that meet citizens' needs.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the project focuses on maintaining heritage landmarks and achieving balanced urban development across environmental, urban, and social aspects. It includes planting 100,000 trees in Old Muharraq, creating shade and enhancing the city's climate, and establishing 72 green spaces covering 12,000 square metres to support environmental sustainability.
Al Mubarak stressed Bahrain's commitment to sustainable urban development in line with the Economic Vision 2030, highlighting the importance of protecting the heritage fabric of Muharraq and ensuring harmony between traditional and modern architecture.
He added that the project preserves Muharraq's cultural and architectural identity while strengthening its role as a leading cultural centre in Bahrain and the region. He described the plan as a national initiative that reflects Bahrain's rich history and heritage, while promoting sustainable development as a key foundation for growth and prosperity.
