Ministry of Foreign Affairs Rejects Iraq’s Maritime Sovereignty Claims Over Kuwait

Manama: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Kingdom of Bahrain has expressed deep concern regarding the recent submission by the Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, which includes coordinates lists and a map that allegedly infringe upon Kuwait's sovereignty over its maritime areas and fixed maritime elevations. This dispute involves the areas of Fasht Al Qaid and Fasht Al A'aij.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the Ministry has strongly affirmed Kuwait's full sovereignty over these maritime regions and has categorically rejected any territorial claims made by Iraq. The Ministry has called upon Iraq to respect the historical relations shared between the two countries and to adhere to international law, specifically the provisions outlined in the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982. Furthermore, Bahrain's Foreign Ministry emphasizes the importance of honoring existing agreements and bilateral memoranda of understanding between Kuwait and Iraq to resolve this issue.
