IS kills two Iraqi army officers, wounds three soldiers in Kirkuk

Two officers were killed and three Iraqi soldiers wounded in an attack by militants of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in northern Kirkuk governorate, the Iraqi Security Media Cell (SMC) announced Sunday.

"Yesterday, ISIS terrorist elements attacked a point belonging to the 32nd Brigade of the 8th Division of the Iraqi army near the village of Tal Al-Ward in Al-Dibs district in Kirkuk province, killing two officers and wounding three soldiers," SMC said in a statement.

"The deputy commander of joint operations, Lieutenant General Qais Al-Muhammadawi, arrived in Kirkuk to oversee the attack and inspect the wounded, and a joint investigation committee arrived to find out the circumstances of the incident and its merits and to find out its causes," SMC added.

It explained that "security leaders and concerned authorities held a meeting to find out the details of this treacherous incident and collect information to reach the terrorist elements that carried out this cowardly act." Iraq declared victory over IS in 2017, however its members are still active in remote rural areas, launching sporadic attacks.
