GCC Organ Transplantation Committee Focuses on Enhancing Regional Health Cooperation

Manama: The GCC Organ Transplantation Committee convened on 27-28 August with the participation of official delegations and representatives from health ministries and specialised centres across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states. The Kingdom of Bahrain was represented by Colonel Dr. Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Commander of King Hamad University Hospital - Royal Medical Services.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting reviewed efforts to enhance Gulf cooperation in organ transplantation, address logistical challenges in organ transfer, and strengthen integration in organ exchange to maximise utilisation. Participants also discussed successful practices, as well as the GCC Health Council's Strategic Plan (2026-2030), which aims to develop a unified platform for organ transplantation, harmonise related regulations, and ensure the sustainability of healthcare systems.

Colonel Dr. Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed affirmed Bahrain's commitment to supporting joint Gulf initiatives in this field, highlighting the role of the National Programme for Organ and Human Tissue Donation and Transplantation "Wamen Ahyaha" (And whoever saves a life). Since its launch in November 2023, King Hamad University Hospital has performed 18 liver and 49 kidney transplants in cooperation with regional and international medical centres.
