Four Convicted in Expired Food Products Fraud Case

Manama: The Chief Prosecutor of the Ministries and Public Entities Prosecution stated that the Lower Criminal Court issued a ruling convicting four defendants in a case involving the possession, storage, and circulation of expired food products through fraud and deception by tampering with their expiry dates in preparation for reintroducing them to the market.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the court sentenced the company's de facto manager to three years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of BD10,000. It also sentenced three company workers to one year in prison and ordered their permanent deportation from the Kingdom of Bahrain after serving their sentences.

The court further ordered the confiscation and destruction of the adulterated products and the tools used in committing the offence, the publication of a summary of the judgment together with its grounds once it becomes final at the expense of the convicted persons, and the closure of the company for six months.

The case began when the Public Prosecution received a report from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, in which a ministry inspector stated that information had been received indicating that a group of workers at a food trading company had tampered with and altered the expiry dates of certain food products in preparation for placing them back on the market.

Inspection procedures resulted in the seizure of quantities of adulterated and spoiled goods. Upon receiving the report, the Public Prosecution immediately launched an investigation, questioned the defendants, and reviewed the technical reports. It concluded that sufficient evidence existed to establish their commission of the offences attributed to them and ordered their detention pending referral to the competent criminal court, which subsequently issued the aforementioned ruling.
