Bahrain Parliamentary Delegation Engages in IPU Webinar on Freedom of Expression and Hate Speech

Manama: Bahrain's parliamentary delegation participated in an online webinar titled "Navigating freedom of expression, freedom of information, cancel culture and hate speech to uphold human rights and foster social cohesion".

According to Bahrain News Agency, the event was organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in cooperation with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. It addressed challenges related to freedom of expression and media freedom, as well as international standards linked to human rights.

The delegation included Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council; MP Hassan Ibrahim Hassan, Deputy Chair of the Committee of Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security; and MP Dr. Mahdi Abdulaziz Al Showaikh.

Discussions focused on the impact of hate culture on social cohesion and strategies to address hate speech based on religion or belief. The webinar also explored ways to promote respect for human rights by raising awareness of fundamental freedoms and sharing successful practices in combating hate and fostering international cooperation.

The event forms part of preparations for the Parliamentary Conference on Interfaith Dialogue, set to take place in Rome later this year, aimed at enhancing interfaith dialogue and promoting world peace.
