Manama: Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the largest aluminium smelter globally at a single location, has reached an exclusive agreement to acquire 100% of Aluminium Dunkerque from AIP VII EUROPE S.a.r.l., a subsidiary of AIP Fund VII, managed by American Industrial Partners (AIP).
According to Bahrain News Agency, this transaction signifies a new phase for Aluminium Dunkerque, securing a long-term owner dedicated to its growth in France and Europe. Aluminium Dunkerque, located in Loon-Plage, produces 300,000 tonnes of aluminium annually and is equipped with advanced automation and production capabilities, positioning it well to meet Europe's rising demand for sustainable aluminium.
Under AIP's ownership, Aluminium Dunkerque enhanced its operational reliability and energy efficiency, strengthened its financial performance, secured long-term electricity agreements, and invested in productivity and modernization. This has reinforced its status as one of Europe's lowest-carbon primary aluminium producers serving strategic sectors like automotive, aerospace, defense, construction, and packaging.
The acquisition by Alba aims to form a geographically diversified group, expanding its global customer base. Alba plans a long-term strategy focused on operational stability, investment, and sustainable innovation, ensuring continuity, employment preservation, and support for Europe's energy transition and industrial goals. Aluminium Dunkerque's location and capabilities complement Alba's global reach, enhancing supply chain resilience to meet global demand for sustainable construction and energy transition.
Khalid Al Rumaihi, Alba's Chairman, described the acquisition as a strategic step to create a globally connected aluminium platform with operational bases in the GCC and Europe, capturing market opportunities while contributing to Europe's industrial resilience and decarbonisation agenda.
Alba's CEO, Ali Al Baqali, emphasized the commitment to supporting Aluminium Dunkerque's development in alignment with France's industrial and energy priorities. Zac Carson from AIP expressed confidence in Alba's ability to build on Aluminium Dunkerque's achievements, given its focus on aluminium smelting, access to critical alumina, and strong financial position.
Guillaume de Gos, CEO and President of Aluminium Dunkerque, welcomed Alba as a new long-term owner, highlighting opportunities for investment and innovation aligned with low-carbon production goals.
The acquisition, funded by a syndicate of relationship banks, awaits definitive agreements and regulatory approvals, with completion expected in 2026. Alba is also in discussions with Bpifrance for a strategic partnership. Financial advisors and legal representatives from both companies have been engaged to facilitate the transaction.
