Alba Joins Sea Cargo Charter to Promote Sustainable Maritime Shipping

Manama: Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the world's largest smelter on one site, has become a signatory of the Sea Cargo Charter, underlining its commitment to sustainable maritime shipping. Alba is the first from Bahrain and the second signatory from the Middle East to join the Charter.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the Sea Cargo Charter serves as a global framework for assessing and disclosing the climate alignment of chartering activities of charterers and shipowners. It enables cargo owners and shipowners to align their operations with responsible environmental practices, driving the decarbonisation of international shipping and contributing to a more sustainable future for maritime shipping and society.

Ali Al Baqali, CEO of Alba, highlighted that the company's decision to join the Sea Cargo Charter underscores its commitment to sustainability and a cleaner future. Al Baqali emphasised that collaboration with industry leaders is key to driving positive change in maritime shipping and minimising environmental impact. He noted that the charter's focus on transparency, accountability, and decarbonisation aligns with Alba's values, making it a significant initiative to be part of.

Rasmus Bach Nielsen, Chair of the Sea Cargo Charter, stated that Alba's inclusion strengthens the charter's growing influence and sector-wide reach, reinforcing a collective commitment to responsible maritime practices. He noted that Alba's membership highlights the important role of aluminium producers in promoting transparency and sustainability in shipping, expressing his pleasure in welcoming the company to the initiative.

72.6% of Alba products are exported worldwide through its sales offices in Zurich and Singapore as well as its subsidiary in Atlanta, USA.
