UK Ambassador welcomes Bahrain’s engagement on difficult issues, boost for transparency

UK Ambassador to Bahrain Roddy Drummond has praised the visit organized by the Ministry of the Interior to the Correction and Rehabilitation Center in Jau for diplomats and representatives of international organizations.

The ambassador hailed the visit on May 3 as an initiative that provides a greater level of transparency.

“I was pleased to visit Jau prison on 3 May with other Ambassadors. We were shown a well-run facility, with good medical provision and measures against Covid, with vaccinations offered to all prisoners. I welcome this initiative by the authorities to be more transparent,” the ambassador posted on his Twitter account.

“I welcome their engagement on difficult issues raised in the media. I support Bahrain’s intent to continue to reform its judicial and prison system, including more use of alternative sentences.”

The ambassadors of Oman – The Dean of the Diplomatic Corps in Bahrain -, China, Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and Italy, the US Chargé affairs, the Russian Official of Consular Affairs, the Head of the European Union delegation residing in Riyadh, The Head of Mission of the International Organization for Migration and Acting Resident Coordinator of United Nations activities visited the center.

Interior Ministry Undersecretary Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa briefed the envoys about the precautionary measures and the services provided to inmates per the Reformation and Rehabilitation Law and rules. He highlighted the center’s daily operations and the efficiency in providing services within the current extraordinary situation.

He said that the Interior Ministry continues to enforce the law and human rights by moving beyond its obligations by reinforcing the human rights culture in police work.

The diplomats and representatives were briefed on the center’s procedures and services provided to inmates, especially round the clock healthcare, including precautionary measures against COVID-19 and the free and optional COVID-19 vaccination, in which 100% of registered inmates were vaccinated.

The envoys visited various facilities of the centre, including the clinics, buildings, the visitations areas. They were informed of call services provided to inmates with their families and other services.

Shaikh Nasser bin Abdulrahman highlighted that the call services for inmates with their families continued and were not stopped.

He confirmed that the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre is opened for human rights organizations, including the National Institute for Human Rights, the Ombudsman and the Prisoner and Detainee Rights Commission that are involved in announced and unannounced visits to ensure that inmates received the stated services.
