UAE Strengthens Its Role in Advancing Clean Energy

Abu Dhabi: The UAE has strengthened its global standing as a leader in the transition to clean energy through advanced projects that enhance energy security, foster innovation, and promote sustainability on the path to a more prosperous future. Marking the International Day of Clean Energy, observed annually on January 26, the UAE has made significant progress in renewable and clean energy projects, establishing itself as a global model for sustainable and equitable energy solutions.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Nawal AlHosany, UAE Permanent Representative to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), highlighted the nation's success in achieving international recognition for January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy, aligning with IRENA's founding date. This milestone underscores the importance of clean energy in safeguarding the environment, driving sustainable development, creating jobs, and boosting economic sectors.

The UAE continues to promote global investment in clean energy initiatives through strategic partnerships, innovative platforms, and financial solutions, particularly in developing and climate-vulnerable regions. Clean energy is a key driver in advancing the green, circular, and climate-resilient economy while supporting global climate commitments, including pledges made during COP28 to triple renewable energy capacity and double energy efficiency by 2030.

Recent achievements include the launch of the world's first large-scale, continuous giga-scale project in Abu Dhabi, combining solar power and battery storage. This project delivers up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of renewable baseload power daily and features a 5.2GW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant integrated with a 19 gigawatt-hour battery energy storage system, setting a global standard in clean energy innovation.

The UAE's portfolio is set to expand further with the Al Ajban Solar Photovoltaic Independent Power Project, expected to generate 1.5GW of electricity by the third quarter of 2026. This project will reduce carbon emissions by over 2.4 million tonnes annually, making it one of the largest independent solar power stations globally.

Currently, the UAE hosts three of the world's largest solar power plants and is targeting a clean energy production capacity of 14.2 GW by 2030. It remains committed to global climate goals, having been the first country in the region to sign the Paris Agreement.

The Barakah Nuclear Power Plant has generated nearly 88,000 gigawatt-hours of eco-friendly electricity to date, reducing carbon emissions by over 43,000 kilotonnes. The plant meets 25% of the UAE's electricity needs and 85% of Abu Dhabi's clean electricity requirements, contributing significantly to the nation's clean energy production.

With the full operation of Barakah's reactors, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Company is advancing research in small modular reactors, advanced nuclear technologies, and hydrogen energy. The company is also investing in international nuclear projects, establishing a regional centre, and strengthening the nuclear energy supply chain.

The UAE's achievements reinforce its position as a global leader in clean energy innovation, paving the way for a sustainable future that balances economic growth, environmental protection, and community well-being.
