Shanghai: Hundreds of thousands of people were evacuated in eastern China as Typhoon Dolphin brought heavy rain and flooding, with authorities warning that risks remain despite the storm weakening after making landfall.
According to Bahrain News Agency, about 167,900 people had been moved from vulnerable areas on land and at sea in Fujian Province as of 7 a.m. Monday, while Shanghai had evacuated around 215,600 people from at-risk areas by late Sunday.
Heavy rain is forecast to continue in parts of Fujian, including Ningde and Nanping, with torrential downpours possible in some areas.
The storm caused widespread disruption to transport and tourism in Fujian, where authorities suspended 686 road passenger routes and 658 train services. A total of 234 major tourist attractions were also closed and dozens of cultural and tourism events cancelled.
In Shanghai, LEGOLAND Shanghai Resort temporarily closed around noon on Monday as the typhoon brought heavy rain to the city. Authorities in the district issued the highest-level rainstorm alert and warned of possible urban waterlogging.
Dolphin, the 13th typhoon of the year, made two landfalls in Zhejiang Province, according to the National Meteorological Center (NMC).
