Istanbul: Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam, Speaker of the Council of Representatives, met with Laurent Wehrli, Chairman of the Twelve Plus Group at the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), on the sidelines of the 152nd IPU Assembly held in Istanbul.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Speaker Al Musallam emphasized the significance of enhancing parliamentary cooperation and coordination with the Twelve Plus Group. He focused on exchanging views regarding the Assembly's agenda items, particularly those related to strengthening international peace and security, as well as promoting dialogue and understanding among peoples.
The Speaker also discussed the emergency item submitted by the Kingdom of Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates. This item condemns the Iranian attacks targeting GCC countries and the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He expressed hope in mobilizing parliamentary support for this initiative, which aims to enhance stability and promote principles of peace and justice due to its humanitarian content.
Al Musallam highlighted the importance of concerted parliamentary efforts in supporting initiatives that address regional and international issues. He noted that the emergency item submitted by Bahrain is based on the United Nations Human Rights Council resolution condemning the Iranian attacks targeting GCC countries and Jordan, as well as UN Security Council Resolution 2817.
Laurent Wehrli, on his part, expressed appreciation for the active role played by the Bahraini parliamentary delegation in contributing to discussions at the IPU meetings. He commended the initiative by Bahrain and the UAE to submit an emergency item to the 152nd Assembly, reflecting a commitment to strengthening the role of parliamentarians in promoting peace and stability worldwide.
