Spain PM declares support to Ukraine EU membership

Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez Saturday reaffirmed Spain's support to Ukraine's bid to join the European Union.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kiev, Sanchez said Ukraine's candidacy for EU membership would be a priority for Spain's EU presidency, which started today and will last until December 21, 2023.

Europe's message to Russian President Vladimir Putin is to continue backing Ukraine whatever the matter is, Sanchez added.

He referred that his presence today in Kiev affirms the European institutions' political commitment towards Ukraine.

Sanchez noted that the EU would continue freezing Russia's assets in Europe and that he approved last week the 11th package of sanctions on Moscow.

Meanwhile, Zelenskyy thanked Spanish and European aid to his country, and Sanchez for his visit to Kiev.

Spain holds the EU presidency as of today, Saturday, for six months.
