SCE Receives FAO Delegation to Enhance Fisheries Statistics in Bahrain

Manama: The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE) received a delegation from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) as part of ongoing cooperation to enhance statistical systems and fisheries methodologies in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The initiative aims to support efforts to manage marine resources and ensure their sustainability.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Mohamed Yousif Al Asam, Director General of Marine Resources, affirmed during the meeting that strengthening the fisheries statistics system represents a strategic step towards improving the accuracy of data on fish stocks and fishing activities. He noted that reliable information plays a key role in supporting decision-making, shaping environmental policies, and enhancing the effective management and sustainability of fisheries resources, while also meeting regional and international reporting requirements.

He added that cooperation with FAO forms part of Bahrain's broader efforts to develop monitoring and analytical tools and adopt international best practices in fisheries management, thereby ensuring the optimal use of marine resources and contributing to relevant Sustainable Development Goals.

The visit included field tours to a number of fisheries-related sites and facilities across the Kingdom, providing an opportunity to review existing methods of data collection and analysis, exchange technical expertise, and work towards adopting international practices that reinforce the efficiency and transparency of the national fisheries statistics system.
