Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission praises royal decree on alternative sentencing

Manama, Sept. 11 (BNA): The Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission has praised the issuance of Decree-Law 24/2021 by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa amending article 13 of law 18/2017 on alternative penalties and measures.

The commission described the move as a new achievement added to the track-record of accomplishments made in rehabilitating the inmates and reintegrating them into the community.

It added that the step is part of the pioneering initiatives taken by the Kingdom of Bahrain to promote human rights at all levels.

The commission hailed the announcements made by Interior Minister, General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, that around 3511 convicts have benefited from the alternative sentencing law which was issued in 2017.

It praised the Interior Ministry’s efforts in applying and extending the alternative penalties and measures, describing that as a model of success and discipline and an indicator for the ministry’s systematic plan to deal with all inmates out of keenness in their interest first and foremost.

The commission also lauded the practical procedures undertaken by the relevant parties concerning the alternative penalties, including mainly the Public Prosecution.

It also commended the efforts of the independent national institutions in supporting enforcement of the alternative procedures.
