Parliamentary committee condemns EP’s resolution; stresses UAE’s rich human rights record

The Foreign Affairs, Defence and National Security Committee at the Council of Representatives, chaired by MP Mohammed Ibrahim Al-Sisi Al-Buainain, has strongly rejected and denounced the resolution issued recently by the European Parliament (EP) regarding the human rights in the brotherly United Arab Emirates, noting that it contained baseless fallacies and slander, far from objectivity and credibility.

In a statement, the committee affirmed that the UAE boasts a rich record laden with landmark achievements in the human rights fields, noting that it has set the example in charitable and humanitarian work locally and abroad during the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic, by providing aid to expatriate workers, facilitating the travel of foreigners to their countries, and providing medical assistance and vaccinations to a large number of countries, earning it the acclaim of the international community.

The committee indicated that the false allegations included in the resolution, and affect the identity and values of the UAE society, are considered an unacceptable transgression against and interference in the internal affairs of the UAE, which is a state of the rule of law and institutions.

The panel affirmed that the resolution clearly violates international charters, treaties and agreements that respect the freedom and independence of countries.

The Committee expressed its deep regret over the European Parliament’s overlooking of the outstanding efforts, pioneering progress, civilised initiatives, judicial procedures, modern human rights legislation, and the multiple achievements of the UAE in all fields.

The panel stressed that respect for human rights is a top priority for the UAE, as reflected in its cultural heritage, constitution, which guarantees civil liberties for all, legislative system that is keen to promote the principles of justice, equality and tolerance, in addition to its firm approach in respecting rights, supporting humanitarian and relief work, which is consistent with the principles of Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The parliamentary committee indicated that the UAE has launched a National Human Rights Authority, created a Ministry for Tolerance and Coexistence, adopted policies and enacted laws to protect the rights of workers, children, women, the elderly, people of special needs and prisoners, adding that it has contributed to combating the phenomenon of human trafficking at regional and international levels.

The committee also confirmed that the UAE has succeeded in fighting the Coronavirus pandemic, combating human trafficking, and ensuring the rights of foreign workers, to mention just a few.

The panel asserted that the European Parliament’s resolution is subjective, contradictory, and causes an atmosphere of hatred that dissipates the great humanitarian efforts exerted by the UAE to promote tolerance, peace and respect for human rights in the Arab world, regionally and globally.
