Pacific Islands Leaders Convene to Address Security and Climate Concerns

Honiara: Pacific Islands leaders commenced a week-long summit on Monday in the Solomon Islands, with an agenda focused on endorsing an "Ocean of Peace" declaration.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the leaders are anticipated to support Australia's proposal to host the COP31 United Nations climate summit. This follows Canberra's commitment to collaborate with its island neighbors to highlight the challenges posed by rising sea levels and increasingly severe storms.

Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is scheduled to arrive in Honiara on Wednesday. Prior to this, he will visit Vanuatu, where he is expected to finalize a significant A$500 million ($326.50 million) agreement aimed at bolstering economic and security relationships.

Meanwhile, New Zealand's Prime Minister Christopher Luxon emphasized his nation's strong advocacy for the inclusion of donor partners in discussions about development opportunities, while noting the forum's overall unity.
