NIHR Engages in MENA Panel on Human Rights and Digital Technologies

Amman: The National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), led by Chairman Ali Ahmed Al Derazi, took part in a significant panel discussion focusing on the convergence of national human rights institutions and the advent of digital technologies across the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Derazi played a pivotal role in moderating the first session of the panel, which delved into four critical topics. These included the application of the international human rights framework to digital technologies, the implications of emerging technologies under the Global Digital Compact, the necessity for legal safeguards surrounding privacy and data protection in the digital era, and the legislative experiences concerning new technologies within the MENA region. Al Derazi emphasized the urgent need for legislative updates to keep pace with rapid technological advancements. He also highlighted the importance of establishing specialized courts dedicated to addressing issues rel ated to digital technologies. The two-day event was designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and foster discussions on the current state of human rights amidst the rise of digital technologies. These technologies have created avenues for progress and innovation but also pose significant challenges in safeguarding individual rights and freedoms.
