Abu Dhabi: The aviation technology firm LODD and 7X, the investment holding group focusing on trade, transport, and logistics, have initiated the first pilot flight for autonomous drone parcel deliveries in Abu Dhabi. This development signifies a significant advancement in the logistics sector within the emirate.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the pilot operation, which took place in Khalifa City, showcased the potential of autonomous aerial parcel delivery. A drone successfully transported a simulated package from a local post office to a designated drop zone using a secure winch-based delivery system.
The initiative is a part of the Smart and Autonomous Systems Council (SASC) strategy, supported by the Abu Dhabi Investment Office (ADIO). It aims to develop and implement smart and integrated mobility solutions across Abu Dhabi. Conducted under the supervision of the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) and the Integrated Transport Centre, this trial is part of a broader strategy to promote smart mobility solutions through ADIO's Smart and Autonomous Vehicles Industry (SAVI) cluster.
Omran Malek, Head of the SAVI Cluster at ADIO, expressed pride in the development and deployment of innovative logistics technologies that enhance Abu Dhabi's status as a global innovation hub. He emphasized that this pilot project exemplifies the local partnerships and strategic planning that contribute to long-term economic and infrastructure benefits for the emirate.
Humaid Saber Al Hameli, Director of the Aviation Transport Division at the Integrated Transport Centre, highlighted the priority of maintaining airspace safety and security. He stated that regulatory frameworks are continually being advanced to ensure the safe and effective integration of unmanned aerial systems into Abu Dhabi's transportation network. The pilot reflects the collaborative strength between public and private sectors and signifies a step toward smart aerial mobility in the region.
Rashid Al Manai, CEO of LODD, noted the transformative impact of autonomous drones on urban delivery networks. He pointed out that with one operator managing multiple deliveries simultaneously, the system offers a new level of scalability and responsiveness in the logistics chain.
Tariq Al Wahedi, Group CEO of 7X, remarked on the milestone achievement, reflecting their ongoing commitment to next-generation logistics solutions in line with the UAE's smart mobility vision. By incorporating autonomous aerial technology into EMX's logistics framework, they aim to enhance operational reach and speed, creating a more adaptive network to meet evolving commercial demands.
This pilot represents the initial phase of a comprehensive strategy to deploy drone-based logistics services throughout Abu Dhabi. With progressive regulation and infrastructure readiness, the emirate is poised to become a leader in autonomous air mobility in the region.
