New york: Tareq Al Banai, Kuwait Permanent Representative to the United Nations, welcomed the UN Security Council (UNSC) resolution vehemently deploring Iranian assaults on Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states and Jordan.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the UNSC Resolution 2817, passed on Wednesday night, represents a clear message from the international community stating unequivocal rejection of any breach of sovereign state or targeting of civilian facilities in the region, Ambassador Al Banai told reporters following the UNSC session.
It states firm support to the sovereignty and territorial safety of the GCC member states and the Kingdom of Jordan in the face of the Iranian missile and drone attacks on civilian infrastructure. The Resolution demands immediate cessation of hostilities and full respect for the rules of international law.
It reaffirms the right of all countries to defend themselves individually or collectively against external threats under Article 51 of the UN Charter. Since February 28, the State of Kuwait has come under 237 missile attacks and 467 drone attacks, Al-Banai added.
The draft resolution, tabled to the UNSC by Bahrain on behalf of the GCC states, was passed by 13 votes, with two abstentions – Russia and China.
