Riyadh: The Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) and the OIC States Broadcasting Union (OSBU) have launched a “green media” declaration aimed at establishing a strategic framework to enhance the role of media in promoting environmental awareness and addressing climate change issues. This initiative was unveiled during the COP16 conference, currently being held in Riyadh, as a collaborative effort led by ICESCO General Director Salim al Malik and OSBU Chairman Amr el-Leithy.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the declaration is part of a bilateral initiative and coincides with the launch of the Mediathon Competition, which focuses on fostering an environmental culture. The competition targets content creators and young innovators, encouraging them to develop media ideas that spotlight climate change issues. Participants will have the opportunity to create media projects using digital tools and modern technologies to advance sustainability discussions.

alled on young media professionals to actively engage in these initiatives, emphasizing the importance of unified efforts to achieve sustainable development through specialized creative media. In a joint statement, both organizations reiterated their commitment to supporting media as a vital tool in addressing global environmental challenges and enhancing partnerships for sustainable development in OIC member states and globally.
OSBU Chairman Amr el-Leithy highlighted the urgency of tackling climate change and promoting sustainable development, noting that COP29 is a significant milestone in international efforts to address the climate crisis and combat desertification. He underscored the necessity of investing in sustainable solutions and the critical role of “green media” in disseminating scientific knowledge. By simplifying complex scientific concepts related to climate change, green media can enhance societal responsibility, influence decision-makers, and foster international partnerships, particularly
among Islamic states and the global community, to achieve shared climate action goals.
El-Leithy affirmed that OSBU is dedicated to leveraging all media platforms to address climate issues effectively.
