HM King Emphasizes Commitment to Press Freedom on World Press Freedom Day

Manama: His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued a message on World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3. His Majesty extended appreciation to the press and media community, reiterating the Kingdom of Bahrain's steadfast commitment to supporting freedom of opinion and expression and responsible press freedom. These principles are essential to a nation built on law and constitutional institutions, reflecting the Kingdom's ongoing democratic process since the launch of its reforms. His Majesty stressed that free and responsible speech reflects the vitality of societies and their public conscience.

According to Bahrain News Agency, His Majesty noted that UNESCO has designated this year's theme as "Shaping a Future of Peace". He mentioned that the theme transcends media issues to encompass the broader human pursuit of peace, harmony, and stability. Journalism, when based on accuracy, responsibility, and professionalism, becomes an effective force in building peace.

His Majesty affirmed that Bahrain continues to enjoy strong national cohesion, embracing different religions and beliefs while maintaining unity in both prosperity and times of difficulty. He highlighted Bahrain's commitment to good neighbourly relations, its avoidance of confrontation, and its pursuit of cooperation based on established principles and values, maintaining a balanced approach in regional and international relations.

Referring to unprecedented and unjustified Iranian aggression against Bahrain and other Gulf and Arab countries, His Majesty commended the readiness and vigilance of the Bahrain Defence Force and security bodies, acknowledging their national responsibility in protecting the Kingdom. He expressed appreciation for the loyalty and unity of the Bahraini people, describing them as a formidable line of defence for the nation.

His Majesty also expressed gratitude to His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, for his support of the press and media sector and his efforts to recognise journalists and media professionals on Bahraini Press Day, observed annually on May 7.

His Majesty praised the pivotal role of Bahraini media across press, radio, and television during recent critical times, noting its professional performance in conveying accurate information to local, regional, and international audiences. He emphasized that national media serves as an important line of defence during times of crisis.

Highlighting the development of Bahraini journalism since the launch of the first newspaper in 1939, His Majesty noted its continued advancement in professionalism, integrity, and responsibility, and its role in supporting national development, reflecting society, and promoting knowledge and awareness.

His Majesty concluded by stressing the importance of journalists and media professionals using their platforms to promote peace, dialogue, and understanding, and to uphold the responsibility of the word with honesty and professionalism.
