Manama: The Government Hospitals hosted Professor Mohamed El-Sawwaf, a renowned expert in paediatric surgery from Tanta University and the Secretary of the Egyptian Paediatric Surgery Association, as part of the "Visiting Doctor" programme. This initiative, overseen by the Supreme Committee for Treatment Abroad, featured significant activity in the field of paediatric and neonatal laparoscopic surgery.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Professor El Sawaf conducted eight complex surgeries on children with rare congenital anomalies, including an urgent operation for a child with Hirschsprung's disease. He also led the diagnosis and assessment of ten intricate medical cases, working closely with local medical teams to develop comprehensive treatment plans.
The programme also featured a specialised workshop in paediatric laparoscopic surgery and three interactive scientific lectures for the Department of Surgery. These events were attended by numerous doctors and medical staff from Bahrain and beyond, with the lectures broadcast via the Teams platform to expand participation.
Dr. Mariam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive of Government Hospitals, stated that hosting esteemed medical experts like Prof. El Sawaf underscores the commitment of government hospitals to advancing specialised fields and fostering expertise exchange, thereby enhancing national medical skills and service quality.
She highlighted Professor El-Sawwaf's vital contributions in both surgery and training, noting that the Visiting Doctor programme is a key resource in supporting the quality of healthcare in the Kingdom.
Professor El Sawaf expressed his appreciation for the organisation and professionalism of Bahrain's health sector, commending the competence of the Bahraini medical and nursing staff. He emphasised that the visit was a valuable opportunity for exchanging advanced medical knowledge and practices, benefiting patients and strengthening the healthcare sector.
Prof. El Sawaf is recognised as a leading specialist in paediatric laparoscopic surgery, with extensive experience in treating complex cases, particularly Hirschsprung's disease, a congenital condition affecting the nerves of the colon.
