Gabriel Martinelli’s Late Goal Sends Brazil to World Cup Round of 16

Houston: Gabriel Martinelli scored a late winner as Brazil secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Japan in the World Cup round of 32 match held in Houston on Monday. Japan took the lead in the 29th minute after Kaishu Sano capitalised on a misplaced pass, advanced towards goal and fired a low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the net. According to Bahrain News Agency, Brazil equalised in the 56th minute through Casemiro, who headed home a cross from Gabriel. As the match appeared to be heading for extra time, Gabriel Martinelli scored the winner in the fifth minute of added time to send Brazil through to the round of 16. Brazil will face the winners of the match between Ivory Coast and Norway in the next round, scheduled to be played on 5 July in New Jersey.
