Foreign Minister Attends UN 80th Anniversary Celebration in New York

New york: Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, attended the United Nations' 80th anniversary celebration at its headquarters in New York, coinciding with the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the event was attended by several dignitaries, including Lulwa Saleh Al Awadhi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council for Women; Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Ruwaie, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the UN in New York; Ambassador Khaled Yousef Al Jalahma, Undersecretary for Political Affairs; and Ambassador Shaikh Abdullah bin Ali Al Khalifa, Director General of Bilateral Relations at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the minister's accompanying delegation.

United Nations Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres delivered a speech highlighting the UN's role as a forum where nations collaborate on global challenges. He recounted the organisation's significant achievements, such as eradicating smallpox, repairing the ozone layer, and preventing a third world war. Guterres stressed the importance of defending and strengthening the UN through initiatives like the 2030 Agenda, the Pact for the Future, and the UN80 initiative, emphasizing collective action as key to achieving peace.

Annalena Baerbock, President of the 80th General Assembly, reflected on the UN Charter's commitment to avoiding past mistakes through cooperation. She underscored the significance of unity in addressing global challenges and the importance of dialogue in making pivotal decisions, encapsulated in the Assembly's slogan "Better Together."

Dr. Al Zayani expressed Bahrain's pride in the UN's influential role in fostering international cooperation and partnerships. He reaffirmed the Kingdom's dedication to strengthening ties with the UN and its agencies, aiming to expand strategic partnerships and achieve common objectives, while wishing the organisation continued progress and success.
