Foreign Minister Advocates for Human Rights and Peace at UN Council

Geneva: Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, participated in the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. In his remarks, Dr. Al Zayani highlighted the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to promoting and safeguarding human rights under the leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the continued follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Dr. Al Zayani outlined several royal initiatives that underscore Bahrain's commitment to human rights. Among these are a royal pardon resulting in the release of over 3,700 inmates last year, the implementation of alternative sentencing since 2017, and the introduction of open prisons. Additionally, he reiterated Bahrain's dedication to advancing the rights of women and children.

The minister detailed Bahrain's fulfillment of international obligations, mentioning the review of seven international conventions and two optional protocols related to children and persons with disabilities. He also highlighted Bahrain's success in addressing 128 out of 172 recommendations from the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) over the past two years, which included implementing national human rights action plan projects.

During his speech, Dr. Al Zayani called on the UN Human Rights Council to acknowledge the right of Middle Eastern nations to peace, emphasizing Bahrain's commitment to human rights, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence. He stressed that Bahrain's approach extends beyond political discourse to a comprehensive strategy fostering stability and security, respecting human rights, and resolving conflicts through dialogue.

Dr. Al Zayani noted that global challenges require renewed commitment to justice, equality, and peace. Highlighting the 33rd Arab Summit chaired by His Majesty King Hamad, he mentioned that Arab leaders underscored the role of human rights, development, and peace in shaping a prosperous future. The Bahrain Declaration provided a vision for regional stability and outlined the importance of Arab cooperation addressing human rights challenges.

Addressing the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Dr. Al Zayani advocated for an international conference to resolve the issue and proposed human rights initiatives like healthcare and education for those affected by conflicts. He stated that Bahrain has formed a specialized national committee to implement Arab Summit initiatives effectively and sustainably, emphasizing discussions on human rights must be grounded in solidarity, peace, and stability.

Furthermore, Dr. Al Zayani reiterated Bahrain's support for global security and peace initiatives while opposing violence, extremism, and terrorism. He stressed that achieving a just and comprehensive peace in the Middle East involves protecting Palestinian rights, preventing displacement, and establishing a fully sovereign Palestinian state coexisting peacefully with Israel.

In conclusion, Dr. Al Zayani urged the UN Human Rights Council to prioritize lasting peace in the Middle East and called on member states to support efforts promoting stability, dignity, and coexistence in the region.
