Manama: The Bahrain National Theatre was the venue for the FIBA Hall of Fame ceremony, part of the biannual Congress hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain, which is set to conclude tomorrow.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the FIBA Hall of Fame aims to honour individuals who have made significant contributions to basketball as players, coaches, or administrators, preserving their legacy and inspiring future generations. The event saw attendance from notable figures, including His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, Vice President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee; Osama bin Saleh Al Alawi, Minister of Social Development; Shaikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, President of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA); and other prominent officials.
The ceremony celebrated several basketball icons, including Pau Gasol of Spain, a two-time NBA champion; Mike Krzyzewski of the United States, a legendary coach; Ticha Penicheiro of Portugal; Andrew Bogut of Australia; Ratko Radovanovic of the former Yugoslavia; Alphonse Bil© of C´te d'Ivoire; Leonor Borrell of Cuba; and Dawn Staley of the US.
T.J. Pollock, FIBA's Head of Development, highlighted the unique aspects of this year's ceremony, noting the inclusion of a museum showcasing rare basketball memorabilia and entertainment segments at the Bahrain National Theatre. The event was a key part of the Congress, which gathered delegations from over 180 countries, reinforcing Bahrain's role in hosting significant sporting events.
His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Ali expressed that hosting the ceremony at a cultural venue like the Bahrain National Theatre added a cultural dimension to international basketball events. He emphasized Bahrain's dedication to integrating culture and sport on a global scale.
Ala'a Madan, President of the Bahrain Basketball Association, remarked that the ceremony showcased Bahrain's pride in athletes who inspire generations. He pointed out that Bahrain has emerged as a favored destination for international events due to its infrastructure and organization, and that the ceremony was a gesture of appreciation for those who shaped basketball's history. Madan also stated that the presence of influential figures in Bahrain motivates local players and embodies the global spirit of basketball.
