Manama: The Farmers' Market, a significant initiative supporting local agricultural production, has recorded the sale of approximately 212 tons of locally grown vegetables by the ninth week of the 2025-2026 season in the Kingdom of Bahrain. This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture and the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD), with backing from private sector entities such as stc Bahrain and BAPCO.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the Farmers' Market is designed to contribute to the food security efforts in Bahrain by promoting Bahraini products in the local market. The initiative operates under an integrated model aimed at sustaining the agricultural sector, reflecting growth in both the volume and diversity of local agricultural production with 104 different crop varieties being sold.
Tomatoes emerged as the most supplied crop, totaling 11,954 kg, followed by red cherry tomatoes at 9,525 kg. Other significant crops included pumpkin at 8,524 kg, eggplant at 8,355 kg, and cauliflower at 7,424 kg. The market also featured corn, mixed cherry tomatoes, cucumber, vine tomatoes, and beetroot among its leading crops.
The market has experienced a strong public turnout, attracting citizens, residents, and visitors alike. This highlights the growing demand for local produce and the market's role in reinforcing the consumption of national agricultural products while linking farmers directly with consumers.
The Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture emphasized its commitment to working with the National Initiative for Agricultural Sector Development to continuously monitor and enhance market operations. This collaboration aims to improve marketing efficiency and support sustainable local production.
The Farmers' Market will remain open to participants and visitors until 14 February 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to bolster local agriculture and enhance food security in Bahrain.
