EWA and UoB Collaborate on Solar Power Project to Boost Renewable Energy in Bahrain

Manama: The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA), in partnership with the University of Bahrain (UoB), has announced the launch of a significant solar power project located on the university campus. The announcement was attended by Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed, President of the Electricity and Water Authority, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, Minister of Education and Chairman of the UoB Board of Trustees, Dr. Fouad Al Ansari, University President, along with other officials.

According to Bahrain News Agency, this project is one of the largest renewable energy initiatives within Bahrain's education sector. It seeks to diversify energy sources, decrease reliance on natural gas, and lower pollution levels. The solar power system will include 64,606 solar panels installed on both parking lots (24.7 MW) and the ground (21.5 MW), ultimately providing a total capacity of 46.2 MW. The system is expected to achieve an annual output of 70 GWh and is projected to reduce carbon emissions by 35,000 tons each year.

EWA President highlighted that the project, with an estimated cost of BHD 9 million, is poised to serve as a model for future renewable energy initiatives supporting Bahrain's sustainability goals. Dr. Juma stressed the importance of collaboration between government institutions and the university in optimizing available space for clean energy solutions.

Dr. Al Ansari pointed out that the solar power system is anticipated to be operational by mid-2026. It will fully supply the campus's daytime electricity needs and permit the export of excess energy to the national grid, thereby diminishing reliance on conventional energy sources.

This initiative is in line with Bahrain's national strategy to expand the adoption of clean energy, enhance efficiency, and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060.
