EU condemns coup attempt in Niger

The European Union (EU) Wednesday condemned a coup attempt in Niger after presidential guards seized President Mohamed Bazoum and blockaded his residence, as well as some ministries.

"The EU condemns any attempt to destabilize democracy and threaten the stability of Niger," said EU High Representative Josep Borrell on his twitter message.

The EU is "very concerned about the ongoing events in Niamey," he said.

The EU associates itself with the statements of the President of Nigeria Tinubu on behalf of the West African economic bloc (Ecowas), he added.
