Egypt urges broadening vaccine access to developing world

Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry on Thursday called for international cooperation to make COVID-19 vaccines accessible to developing countries, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Shoukry made the remarks during the first meeting of the International Forum on COVID-19 Vaccine Cooperation jointly held by 23 countries, including China and Egypt, via video links, and hosted by Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

Stressing the importance of boosting the production capacity of COVID-19 vaccines in developing countries, Shoukry expressed “Egypt’s appreciation for the support provided by China in this regard,” the Egyptian ministry said.

With China’s support, Egypt has become one of the first developing countries to have the production capacity. The two countries have recently celebrated the joint production of 1 million doses of the Chinese Sinovac COVID-19 vaccine in Egypt.

Shoukry also called for providing sufficient and sustainable financial support for COVAX “to accelerate vaccination rates in developing countries,” noting the growing gap in vaccination between the developing and the developed world.
