Director General of Criminal Investigation Participates in UN Commission on Narcotic Drugs

Vienna: Brigadier Abdulaziz Al Rumaihi, Director General of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, participated in the 68th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs, held from March 7-14. Al Rumaihi conveyed the greetings of General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of Interior and Chairman of the National Committee for Combating Drugs, and his wishes for the success of the meeting. He emphasised the Kingdom of Bahrain's commitment to enhancing international security cooperation and partnerships with global and regional drug enforcement agencies, including the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Al Rumaihi highlighted Bahrain's active participation in this annual international gathering, reflecting the country's commitment to tackling drug abuse and illicit substances while promoting a drug-free society. He highlighted that combating drugs is a priority for safeguarding public health and security, with the Kingdom focusing on youth protection through awareness programmes in collaboration with civil society organisations.

The Director General discussed the Maan (Together) programme for violence and addiction prevention, a globally recognised initiative integrated into Bahrain's school curriculum to raise awareness about drug abuse, violence, and addiction. He noted its significant expansion across public and private schools.

He also highlighted the ministry's efforts in drug enforcement, reporting a rise in arrests of traffickers and dealers in collaboration with relevant agencies. Alongside enforcement measures, the Kingdom has continuously updated its drug control regulations to ban emerging substances. Internationally, Bahrain works closely with various countries to combat drug trafficking, providing intelligence that has led to major arrests in cooperation with GCC states and other nations.

Al Rumaihi outlined the Kingdom's initiatives in alternative sentencing and the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre, which support rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders. These measures aim to provide second chances while ensuring deterrence and social stability.

Bahrain's pavilion at the accompanying exhibition was inaugurated, showcasing the country's efforts in combating drug abuse.
