Niger's President Mohamed Bazoum and his family are "safe" and sound after they were held by security guards inside the presidential palace, his office said on Wednesday.
The entrance to the palace has been blocked by military vehicles in what the Niger president's office described as a failed "anti-republican" movement, while African leaders have slammed the events as an "attempted coup." The former French colony is no stranger to failed coups, having witnessed four such incidents since gaining independence in 1960.
